Movember is an annual initiative in November that raises awareness for men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s mental health. It began in 2003 in Australia and now is celebrated across the world.

If you haven’t heard of Movember yet, the general “rules” of the month are for men to grow out their beards and mustaches during November, to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide prevention. It is designed to spark conversations around topics that can sometimes be hard for men to discuss openly.

If you’re caring for an elderly loved one who is a man, you might ask him to try to grow out his facial hair this month to support those other men who have had their lives touched by a men’s health issue. You might also use this month to talk directly to your loved one about the symptoms of each health issue, so that he can feel more comfortable sharing with you or another care provider, like his home care team, about any symptoms he may be experiencing. The sooner he’s ready to have a symptom discussed and treated, the better his chances are of catching something before it’s too late.

Let’s look at the symptoms of these top three men’s health issues.

Prostate Cancer Symptoms

  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Struggling to start urination or stop it
  • Painful or burning sensation when urinating
  • Difficulty in having an erection
  • Painful ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Constant lower back, hips, or upper thigh pain

Since many of these symptoms occur in the privacy of the bathroom or bedroom, encourage your elderly loved one to speak up to someone he is comfortable with if he is experiencing any of these symptoms. It can be you, his physician, or even a member of his senior home care team that he trusts.

Testicular Cancer Symptoms

  • A lump in one of his testicles
  • A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
  • A groin or lower belly ache that won’t go away
  • Swelling in the scrotum
  • Testicle or scrotum discomfort and pain
  • Tender breast tissue
  • Back pain

A physician will know how to examine and determine the cause of your loved one’s pain. Therefore, making an appointment immediately is important if he courageously shares any of these symptoms with you.

Suicidal Thoughts

Strong social connections can reduce the risk of suicide. These connections can happen in various environments, whether it’s family, friends, or a support network that includes his senior home care team. Your loved one needs to talk about stuff that matters and the emotions that he’s feeling. Those conversations don’t always come easy, but having a safe place for you to ask the tough questions and for him to answer them honestly is important.

Remember, Movember is more than just growing a beard, it’s about helping your loved one talk about important health conditions.
